Rock n Roll: the equalizer.

The 1960s brought about a global transformation in popular music. The era proved to be a confluence of factors which enabled sonic and stylistic changes to music which had, for the most part, been dominated by safe, sensible music.

In addition to schools and politics, the 60s are where we begin to see the desegregation of music. Chart toppers like Cannibal & the Headhunters, The Chambers Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, Daughters of Eve, Love, and ? and the Mysterians proved the power of music and the appeal of rock stardom could overcome some of mainstream culture’s prejudice and stigma. Around the world, the 60s rock sound was recorded and performed – an absolutely transcendent sound that provided economic opportunity, reprieve from hardships, and an everlasting catalog of epic fuzz and noise which we can still enjoy to this day.

It is in this spirit of embracing all who embrace music that Portland’s Nuggets Night Festival continues. We never thought much about equity before writing this equity statement. Our philosophy has been that so long as the music is performed and enjoyed, it doesn’t matter how the listener or musician identifies, what their race is, or who they love. We book performers based on their love of Nuggets and their willingness to blast our eardrums with sonic vibrations. We believe the 60s were the beginning of a better world. We seek to continue those efforts.
